The Chatham Dockyard Oral History Project was established to collect the reminscences and experiences of the men and women who worked at Chatham Dockyard between 1945 and 1984 (when the Dockyard closed). Since it started many former workers have been in touch and helped with the project by participating in interviews, completing questionnaires and by helping me to understand technical issues, etc. This help is greatly appreciated and has helped to shape the project. In fact the information that has been collated so far has helped to shape its current direction.
The project is now strongly focused on the history of health and safety at the Dockyard. The purpose of this website to to carry on collecting the experiences of former dockyard workers, but for the more specific issues of the asbestos and radiation hazards at the Dockyard and of attitudes to health and safety. I would love to hear from anyone who would like to contribute their memories.
The information collected during the project will ultimately contribute to my PhD thesis and/or publications. Data will also be passed to the Chatham Dockyard Historical Society and the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust once the project has ended so that it can be used by researchers in future. Participants will be given the opportunity to remain anonymous.
